Funeral Messages | What to say at a Funeral

If you are called on to give a speech at a funeral, figuring out what funeral messages to convey can be a traumatic experience in itself, on top of the grief you are already feeling. Most people are afraid of public speaking so add to this fears of offending people or of inadequately describing the importance of a loved one who has passed away and it is understandable why this is a troubling mission.

We have compiled some fool-proof funeral messages below, and we hope to add to this list over time.

Remember that funerals are also known as ‘memorial services’ or ‘commemoration services’. They are a time for friends and family of those who have passed on to remember the life of somebody dear to them. If you remember the purpose of the funeral service and filter your speech, quotes and your behavior through this way of thinking first, it is difficult to make a mistake.

Above all, remember to be honest about your feelings. Everybody at the service is likely to be upset too, so if you are brave enough to tell them how you truly feel, you will be appreciated and do honor to the memory of he or she who has passed away.

If love could have saved you,
you would have lived forever.

Until we meet again,
may God Hold you
in the palm of his hand.

“From seeds of his body blossomed the flower that liberated a people and touched the soul of a nation.”
- Jesse Louis Jackson

Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

God pours life into death and death into life without a drop being spilled.  ~Author Unknown

The fear of death follows from the fear of life.  A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.  ~Mark Twain

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

Death leaves a heartache
No one can heal;
Love leaves a memory
No one can steal

The day which we fear as our last is but the birthday of eternity.  ~Seneca

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free.

Miss me a little – but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me – but let me go.

for this is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It’s all part of the Master’s plan,
A step on the road home.

When you are lonely, and sick of heart,
Go to friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me – but let me go.

Things not to say at funerals:

  • “I know how you feel.”
  • “It’s time for you to move on”
  • “We all have to die some time”
  • “There must be a reason this has happened”
  • “It was his/her time to go”
  • Do not say anything at all to do with financial matters, the will or anything that isn’t strictly a statement of emotional support.
